However, music is scalable so it can be normalized to any standard without losing quality. You can’t uncompress something that’s been compressed, but you can always compress something that has retained its natural dynamic range.

Just keep in mind that it’s the dynamic range that really matters. I recommend doing this experiment if you’re having difficulty visualizing these concepts. The unit of measure most common is the decibel (dB). Thus we need a measure that allows us to quantify what we hear. What is loud to one person is not to another. Loudness, to a great degree, is subjective.

Something I didn’t mention is that you can actually master your tracks at ANY loudness standard and simply use another software to normalize your track to mimic the effect of any given platform. In particular, we will explore the elusive relationship between speaker output (volume) and amplifier output (power). LOUDER IS BETTER, BUT NOT BY SACRIFICING SOUND QUALITY. When it comes to how loud something sounds, it’s a slightly different ballgame, but we can still understand it using the decibel scale. Measurements made with this scale are expressed as dB(A). Using the dBA-filter, the sound level meter is less sensitive to very high and very low frequencies. However, remember what we learned in the first two sections of this article… dB(A) roughly corresponds to the inverse of the 40 dB (at 1 kHz) equal-loudness curve for the human ear. In actual fact the experiements were fraught with diculties, and the results have be disputed. Ie, if you played two notes, one at 1KHz and one at 100Hz, the one at 100Hz would sound about 18dB quieter, or so the arguments goes. There’s no need to worry about memorizing anything with this plugin! This led to the A-weighted dB scale to approximate the perceived loudness of a sound at dierent frequencies. A sound meter uses a display with a decibel range and resolution to approximate the ear’s dynamic range, usually the upper range rather than the quiet part. To express levels of sound meaningfully in numbers that are more manageable, a logarithmic scale is used, rather than a linear one. It basically serves as both a loudness meter (LUFS) and an encyclopedia of all the different loudness standards. When you measure noise levels with a sound level meter, you measure the intensity of noise called decibel units (dB).
